Exhibition on the 40th Anniversary of Karol Wojtyła’s Visit to Madonna di Campiglio

On the morning of July 16, 1984, a helicopter suddenly landed near the Lobbie refuge on Adamello in the Italian Trentino region. On board were Pope John Paul II and the President of the Republic, Sandro Pertini. The Pope had set aside two days for skiing and had also invited Sandro Pertini.

The Pope’s ski trip was kept highly secret. It wasn’t until the afternoon of July 16 that the media learned that Pope Wojtyła was on Adamello. The anniversary of this visit was an occasion to organize an exhibition presenting photographic documentation from the book “Karol Wojtyła in Trentino,” edited by Giorgio Gelmetti. The exhibition, conceived by Ettore Zampiccoli and created by architect Roberto Festi, recalls moments from the two days of skiing enjoyed by the Pope, who was passionate about the sport.

The exhibition was organized by the tourist organization from Madonna di Campiglio, in collaboration with the municipality of Pinzolo. This unique exhibition can be seen until September 8 at the San Vigilio Church in Pinzolo.

“If anyone happens to be in the area, I strongly encourage you to visit this extraordinary exhibition. The Italian region of Madonna di Campiglio is a long-time, trusted partner of ours. During this year’s edition of the Tour de Pologne, to commemorate the town where the great Pole – Karol Wojtyła – was born, we have planned the start of the sixth stage in Wadowice,” said Czesław Lang, General Director of the Tour de Pologne.
