Thibau Nys shone on the course of the 81st Tour de Pologne. Now He’s the European Champion!

The talented Thibau Nys from the Lidl-Trek team was one of the biggest stars of the 81st Tour de Pologne. After a phenomenal victory in Karpacz, the Belgian was the first to don the yellow jersey as the ORLEN general classification leader. Later in the race, he claimed two more stage wins. Now he has added the European Cyclocross Championship title to his achievements!

It’s long been known that the Tour de Pologne is a race where well-known riders compete with rising stars for victory. One of them in this year’s edition was undoubtedly Thibau Nys, who dominated challenging mass-start stages.
No one quite expected that the three hardest stages would go to a 21-year-old from the Lidl-Trek team. The Belgian had no rivals on the Orlinek climb in Karpacz, Polana Jamrozowa in Duszniki-Zdrój, and the hills near the BUKOVINA Resort. He had already showcased his talent with wins on the roads of Switzerland and Hungary, but it was at the Tour de Pologne that he cemented his position as one of the world’s top riders in challenging, hilly terrain.

Thibau Nys has been connected with cycling since childhood — fans of popular cyclocross races are well acquainted with the young Belgian’s father, Sven, one of the most decorated athletes in the history of the discipline.

“He’s a very interesting rider. You can tell he inherited everything great from his father Sven, an excellent cyclocross rider. He has a combination of skills that can bring him many victories on tough, hilly stages. It’s wonderful to watch such beautiful careers develop in our race.” said Czesław Lang during the 81st Tour de Pologne.

Unlike his father, Thibau Nys is already achieving great success on the road.

“If you had told me five years ago that I would be winning road races, I would have looked at you with pity. But as you can see, I can balance both worlds.” he said.

Now he’s winning on both the road and in cyclocross. Recently, Thibau Nys once again demonstrated his talent by triumphing in the prestigious Koppenbergcross in Belgium, and on Sunday, for the first time in his career, he became the European champion in the elite race.

“This is crazy! Next week, I’ll be racing in the European champion’s jersey. Everything came together perfectly. I’m so happy that I’m at a loss for words to describe it.” Thibau Nys said after winning the title.

Many experts compare the young Belgian to Mathieu van der Poel, who for years has successfully combined road and cyclocross racing, achieving remarkable success in both disciplines. Thibau Nys is well on his way to following in his footsteps.
